Magnetic Strings In Five Dimensional Gauged Supergravity Theories

A. H. Chamseddine, W. A. Sabra

TL;DR

This work constructs 1/4-BPS magnetic string solutions in five-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity with abelian vector multiplets. By analyzing gravitino and gaugino variations in a spherically symmetric background, the authors derive a universal string metric governed by the magnetic central charge and a generalized Dirac quantization, with the scalars fixed by minimizing Z and the charges linked to the gauge coupling. The results show universality across gauged 5D theories, with special cases lifting to higher-N theories, and reveal naked singularities as the default, though horizon-bearing solitons may exist with hyperbolic transverse geometry. The findings connect five-dimensional M-theory compactifications to BPS magnetic strings and have potential implications for AdS/CFT contexts and the study of non-perturbative BPS configurations.

Abstract

Magnetic BPS string solutions preserving quarter of supersymmetry are obtained for all abelian gauged d=5 N=2 supergravity theories coupled to vector supermultiplets. Due to a ``generalised Dirac quantization'' condition satisfied by the minimized magnetic central charge, the string metric takes a universal form for all five dimensional gauged theories.
