A Note on Warped String Compactification

Chang S. Chan, Percy L. Paul, Herman Verlinde

TL;DR

The note argues that Randall-Sundrum–type warped compactifications can be realized within string theory by studying warped F-theory backgrounds on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and reducing them to five dimensions. It outlines how the warp factor, fluxes and D3/D7-branes determine a 10-d geometry that naturally yields a supersymmetric RS-like domain wall after dimensional reduction, with a finite 4-d Newton constant and a holographic interpretation via AdS/CFT. The authors discuss stability issues and the need for near-conformal UV behavior to sustain a large gauge hierarchy, linking the feasibility of RS scenarios to the dynamics of the dual gauge theory. Overall, the paper highlights a rich interplay between warped geometry, string compactifications, and phenomenological hierarchies, suggesting warped string backgrounds as a promising direction for realizing RS-like physics in a UV-complete framework.

Abstract

We give a short review of a large class of warped string geometries, obtained via F-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, that upon reduction to 5 dimensions give consistent supersymmetric realizations of the RS compactification scenario.
