[DC] bRight XR: How to train designers to keep on the bright side?

Romain Rouyer, David Bourguignon, Stéphanie Fleck

TL;DR

Ethical tensions in adaptive-XR risk compromising user well-being if designers lack guidance. The authors propose bRight-XR, a Design-Based Research (DBR) framework that integrates a heuristic evaluation matrix, pedagogical prototypes, and a pre-validated training kit grounded in learning theory and cognitive science. They detail a three-phase methodology to identify ethical criteria, test training approaches with Design Fiction, and publish an open-source toolkit for broad adoption. The work aims to enable proactive, cross-disciplinary ethics training as XR technologies democratize, reducing adverse effects and guiding user-centered design.

Abstract

This research project aims to promote ethical principles among designers engaged in adaptive-XR by providing tools for self-assessment. We introduce a Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology to build bRight-XR, a framework including a heuristic evaluation matrix and based on learning theory.
